Fjord-O
Nordvestgaloppen attracting the world’s best orienteers
- It is
not many competitions in relevant terrain to use as preparations for the
World Orienteering Championships (WOC 2010) in
Trondheim, Thierry Gueorgiou says. Therefore, I
will probably take part in Fjord-O in Sogndal in the middle of July. Short
time after EOC in Bulgaria, I will make the
decision and make a detailed plan for my preparation for WOC.
One week before the start of EOC, Fjord-O visited
Gueorgiou, Philippe Adamski
and Thibaut Magne in
their home city in France, Saint-Étienne, for one of their last hard
training sessions before EOC. A 5.4 km
middle distance course in a terrain relevant for the EOC
was on the program. As normal Thierry Gueorgiou
was the best, with the time of 25 minutes.
- It was a good training, but this flat terrain with little details is not
my favourite terrain, he says. Now I am tired,
and need to rest a lot during the next days, to be fit for EOC. I probably could have run two minutes faster if I
had good legs.
Both Thierry Gueorgiou and Philippe Adamski are very satisfied winning Tiomila
with Kalevan Rasti, but
now, the focus is towards EOC and WOC. But they also want to perform well in Jukola in the middle of June. After Jukola,
almost all their time will be spent in Norway.
- I need competitions in relevant terrain. Therefore, I can’t train
in Trondheim all the time, and O-Ringen in Sweden
does not have optimal terrain for my preparations. To meet some of the
favorites for the WOC in Trondheim, Fjord-O in
Sogndal is a good way to prepare. I believe the Norwegian runners will be
very strong in WOC. They have several runners who
can take medals. The Norwegians have an advantage in both running capacity
and the ability to choose the best route choices in the terrain in
Trondheim.
Thierry Gueorgiou wants to be the best runner in
the World. Gueorgiou won the gold medal in last
years middle distance in WOC, but not the World
Cup overall. Last year the Swiss Daniel Hubmann
won gold medals in the WOC (long distance and
relay) and the World Cup overall. This year Thierry Gueorgiou
is extremely motivated to be the number one! We will get the answer in
August. Hubmann and the Swiss team will not take
part in Fjord-O, since they have a training camp and selection races at the
same time as Fjord-O 2010 in Sogndal.
Thierry Gueorgiou and other top runners can take
part in Fjord-O without charges, and they will have good accommodation
possibilities in the centre of Sogndal.

Thierry Gueorgiou has good view from his apartment in Saint-Étienne in France, but
he is looking forward to challenging
competitions in Norway.
